Research

Understanding the failures that contributed to the current crisis is critical to avoid such failures in the future. Healing the damage caused to the faithful - laity and clergy, alike - requires a careful examination of the scope and nature of that damage. The Catholic Project will sponsor and support research initiatives aimed at deepening our understanding of all facets of the crisis so that the Church’s efforts at renewal and reconciliation can be built on solid foundations. To this end, The Catholic Project is looking at researching the following issues:

National Study of Catholic Priests

The Catholic Project has begun a National Study of Catholic Priests. Catholic priests in the United States face many challenges. The abuse crisis has put additional strain on many priests - on their relationships with their bishops, their fellow priests, and the flock they serve - even as large-scale demographic, financial, social, and cultural changes reshape the Church in the United States. Read the highlight report.

The Dallas Charter

There is reason to believe that the Dallas Charter and Essential Norms have made the Catholic Church in the United States one of the safest environments for children. Evaluating the Charter and Norms - to learn what elements have worked and which have not over the past two decades—is an important part of continuing to protect children and institute accountability.

The Impacts of Diocesan Bankruptcies

Over two dozen American dioceses have entered bankruptcy in recent decades, mostly as a result of the clerical sexual abuse crisis. What are the long-term impacts of such bankruptcies? Which ministries suffer the most?

Financial Corruption

Financial corruption and mismanagement affect many parishes and dioceses. A study of existing cases might help determine best practices and improved prevention protocols to stop financial corruption before it happens and mitigate the fallout when it does.
