On the Feast of Stephen

Stephen White of Catholic University reflects on the feast of St. Stephen on December 26 and the carol about “Good King Wenceslaus”:

“Wenceslaus may not have been a king in life, but in following Stephen’s footsteps – first in service to the Church and especially to the poor, and then in martyrdom – he earned his true crown. And the last lines of that marvelous carol take on a new gloss of meaning.”

Statue of St. Wenceslaus by Peter Parler (presumed), c. mid-to-late14th century [Metropolitan Cathedral of Saints Vitus, Wenceslaus and Adalbert, Prague]. Parler (1333-1399) was among the greatest master builder-craftsmen in Europe.
