Call for Proposals

National Study of Catholic Priests

The National Study of Catholic Priests - the largest study of the U.S. Catholic Priesthood in more than 50 years - includes a nationally representative survey of priests (N=3516), in-depth interviews (N=104), as well as a national survey of Catholic bishops (N=131).

We are requesting proposals from scholars who can help us better analyze and contextualize these data. Proposals can include empirical as well as historical/theological contributions to contextualize the data. Selected candidates will work together to develop an edited volume.

Around ten researchers will be selected to participate in project consultations and workshops either in-person or online in 2023; research and write a substantial chapter engaging the data in distinct ways; present their work at a conference at the Catholic University of America in 2024; and have their work published in an edited volume to be submitted to a major university press.

Each researcher will receive a stipend of $2,500 as well as travel expenses to consultations and the conference.

Interested scholars should submit a CV and a brief (500 words maximum) proposal of what they would investigate and why it matters, by February 19, 2023. Decisions will be sent out in early March.

Submissions as well as inquiries about this project can be sent to Sara Perla at perla@cua.edu
